HAKOM: A Significant Growth of Railway Transport Market in the first Quarter of 2019

In the first quarter of 2019, rail freight activity recorded positive trends in the total volume of goods transported by rail. The 20% increase has been recorded in comparison to the same quarter of the previous year.
ZAGREB, June 17, 2019 - In the first quarter of 2019, “ more goods were transported by rail and 20% more net tonne kilometres was realized than in the same quarter of the previous year. The increase in the operation of freight carriers had an impact in the increased usage of the railway infrastructure and 5 % more tonne kilometres were realized compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The positive trend of freight transport has contributed to the activity of new freight carriers who have transported more than half of the goods by rail recording 63 % increase in tonne kilometres compared with the first quarter of last year. The historic freight carrier also increased its work and transported 11 % more goods, achieving 1.5 % more tonne kilometres and 3.3 % more kilometres compared to the first quarter of last year.
In passenger rail transport, there was a drop in the number of passengers carried by almost 1% compared to the same quarter last year, as well as a drop in passenger kilometres for the observed period, which is less than 1.5%.
