HAKOM: The Republic of Croatia within the Countries with the greatest Progress on the IDI Index Level as published by the ITU, where the degree of ICT development is measured
Referring to the global ICT development based on internationally comparable data, the Republic of Croatia took the 36th place (42nd in 2016) and ranked among six countries that had progressed for 5 or more places compared to 2016.
ZAGREB, December 20, 2017 - The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has published a global report on the information society "Measuring the Information Society Report 2017". The report analyses the ICT development in all UN Member States and an integral part of the report is the ICT Development Index (IDI) as an indicator for countries to the degree of ICT development. Croatian IDI recorded growth from 6.96 in 2016 to 7.24 in 2017. The Republic of Croatia ranks in 36th place in the world being within 6 countries which have made progress for 5 or more places since last year . Looking only at Europe, the Republic of Croatia has made the biggest progress in the rankings (progress for 6 seats), taking the 24th place compared to the 30th in 2016. Greece, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Italy, Hungary and Poland are behind Croatia.
The IDI index consists of ICT access index , the ICT usage index and the ICT skills index. The ITU calculates the IDI index based on data collected by HAKOM through quarterly statistical questionnaires that are verified and published on HAKOM pages. The Republic of Croatia has achieved growth in all three categories while the greatest progress has been recorded in the ICT use whose index has risen from 6.05 to 6.45. The reason is the significant increase in the number of active users of broadband Internet access through the mobile network, whose prices are among the lowest in the world compared to the gross national income.
At the end of report with reference to the part related to Croatia ITU concludes that the Republic of Croatia has a well-developed telecommunications infrastructure continuing to invest in its modernization. The ITU also implies that the ICT penetration within households is relatively high and the number of people using the internet is steadily on the rise.
