Marking of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is at the same time the anniversary of the establishment of ITU, which was founded in Paris on 17 May 1865 when first International Telegraph Convention was signed and it first operated as the International Telegraph Union.
ZAGREB, 17 May 2016 – This Tuesday, 17 May, is marked in the entire world as the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. The marking of the World Telecommunication Day started in 1969, and of the World Information Society Day in 2005. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) decided in 2006 to mark both days under a single name and 17 May thus became the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is at the same the anniversary of the establishment of ITU, which was founded in Paris on 17 May 1865 when first International Telegraph Convention was signed and it first operated as the International Telegraph Union. ITU received its current name in 1934, and in 1947 it became the second oldest specialized UN Agency. During its existence ITU has actively followed all changes related to the global communications development and it remained consistently focused on connecting the entire world population and on protecting the basic right of every individual to communicate. Ever since it became the full member of ITU on 3 June 1992, the Republic of Croatia has actively participated in its activities and in the work of its administrative and working bodies. The Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Industries (HAKOM) represents the interests of the Republic of Croatia through its membership in this international organization and it actively participates in international regulatory gatherings.
