ZAGREB, February 9, 2016 – Following the invitation of the organizer the Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Industries (HAKOM), the World Safer Internet Day was held in Split. In cooperation with the Ministry of Social Policy and Youth, Faculty of Law of the University of Split, CARNet, Child Protection Centre of Zagreb and “Brave Phone” HAKOM held a series of lectures and workshops intended for schoolchildren, their teachers and parents in order to educate and promote a responsible and safe usage of the Internet and mobile devices. At the gathering attended by over a hundred students from Split primary schools and their teachers it was pointed out that it is difficult to ensure child’s and young people’s safety on the Internet without an adequate consideration and a raised level of knowledge of those who should support and protect them, the ones responsible, their parents.
Modern communication technologies offer a wide range of information about everything we are interested in thus enabling the communication, however the freedom provided by the Internet simultaneously turns into danger if the so called “Network of all Networks” is not used in a safe manner. There are many possibilities of abuse, and the greatest danger threatens the children and minors. Therefore, this year's celebration is a good opportunity to talk about safe and responsible use of the Internet and mobile devices with special emphasis on the protection of children and young people. Together with its partners on this project HAKOM wanted to encourage the young users to use the Internet in a proper and safe manner. On this occasion we wanted to convey the message that the use of technology and the Internet is desirable but it should be safe and responsible. We also wanted to point out that although the virtual and real world differ although privacy should be preserved in both and we should act in accordance with good habits. Each of us should contribute to the knowledge dissemination, exchange of best practices, respect for human rights and safety of the most vulnerable ones. - Mario Weber, emphasised in his opening speech.
The activities carried out around the world on this day try to involve as many students as possible in order to become aware of the security issues on the Internet. Therefore HAKOM used this opportunity to present a brochure designed for parents and their children. The brochure entitled "How to keep your child safe in the world of Internet, network technologies and mobile phones was presented by HAKOM’s Consumer Protection Expert Gordana Kulišić while the lecture about the dangers on the Internet was held by Roland Lipošinović, Information Technologies Expert. Marija Boban from the Faculty of Law, the University of Split held a lecture on e - Bonton 3 rules of safe communication on the Internet and Marin Stanić, the CARNet representative spoke about the safe use of Facebook.
