HAKOM: New freight Carriers have an increasing Share in the Cargo Transport Market
NEWS
The new carriers strengthened their position on the railway service market and re-expanded their share in the volume of goods transported and in the performance of tonne kilometres. ZAGREB, March 7, 2018 - Data on the volume increase of goods delivered in the fourth quarter show that the liberalization of the rail services market has had positive impact on the development of the rail freight market in Croatia. New freight carriers have strengthened their position on the market, which is visible in the total share of goods delivered in the fourth quarter of 2017, which is 9 percent higher than the previous quarter and even 22 percent higher compared to the fourth quarter of 2016. The total volume of goods transported by Croatian railways in the fourth quarter of 2017 is higher by 1% compared to the same period of the previous year, thus continuing with a positive trend in freight transport. The fourth quarter was marked by the business activity of six of the seven freight carriers who have all the preconditions for carrying out the railway transport in the Republic of Croatia. Only one new freight carrier was not active during 2017, while other freight carriers noted a steady increase in business activity. Unlike private carriers, historical freight carrier has lowered its share of the market with as much as 85 percent in 2016 to 60 percent in 2017. In the fourth quarter of 2016, the new freight carriers had a 15% share in total tonne kilometres while in the same period in 2017 the share increased to 28%. Referring to the passenger rail transport the process of slowing down of the number of transported passengers is in decline In comparison to the fourth quarter of 2017 with the same quarter of 2016, 1 percent decline is evident, but compared to the last quarter of 2017 with the quarter before a growth of 26 percent is visible. The number of passenger kilometres achieved in the fourth quarter was lower by 4 percent compared to the same quarter last year, but also by 16 percent compared to the fourth quarter of the previous quarter.
