HAKOM: The Activities in Rail Freight transport continue to increase

In the third quarter of 2017 the market rail freight transport recorded an increase. In comparison to the same quarter last year the recorded growth of carried goods amounts 27%.

 
ZAGREB, 4 December 2017 – The business activity of freight carriers has been increasing since the rail freight market was liberalized in 2013. The total volume of goods transported increased by 27% in the third quarter of 2017 in comparison to the same period last year as well 23% increase in travelled tonnes kilometres.  
 
At the same time, the increase usage of railway infrastructure has been recorded by 3 percent of rain kilometres, indicating the usage of minimum access package. Aside from increased usage of minimum access package, the infrastructure manager has recorded increase by 75% in the usage of service facilities of gauge tracks.

New cargo carriers recorded 94% increase in tonnes of kilometres in the third quarter of 2017 compared with the same quarter last year, which is a key indicator of the intensive operation of carriers and continued growth in the share of new rail carriers in the rail freight transport market in the Republic of Croatia. When talking about the comparisons of the same periods the increase of activities (by 11%) of the historical freight carrier HŽ Cargo d.o.o. has been recorded as well.

On the freight rail market, measured by the volume of carried, goods, the share of new freight carriers in the third quarter of 2017 amounts 31% which is an increase of 6% compared to the previous quarter of 2017 and 15% increase  compared to the same quarter last year. The market share measured by tonne kilometres has not changed (24%) compared to the second quarter of this year but  it has increased by 8% compared to the third quarter of 2016.

Comparing the third quarter of 2016 and the same quarter of 2017, the fall in  passenger rail transport has been slowed down. In the aforementioned quarter of 2017  the fall of 1% has been recorded  in comparison to the same quarter last year, while for the aforementioned period the number of passenger kilometres recorded the fall of 13%.
