HAKOM: Increased amount of Rail Freight Transport

The total amount of goods transported by rail is 36 percent higher than it was in the same quarter last year.


ZAGREB, May 29, 2017 - Data for the first quarter of 2017 show a continuation of increased business activity of all freight carriers, which is evident by an increase of 36 percent of goods transported and the increase of 33 percent  in tonne kilometres compared over the same period last year. Along with the increased amount of Rail Freight Transport the rail infrastructure was used more as well and the increase of 3 percent of was in "train kilometers" compared to the same period last year. The usage of almost all rail services has increased.

The first quarter of 2017 marked the business activity of five new freight carriers on the Croatian railways and the increase of the transport of the historic Rail Freight carrier. After a year of active business activity, all new freight carriers record a steady share growth in the Croatian market. The first quarter of 2017 their share continued to increase in volume of goods carried and tonne kilometres achieved. The share of new cargo carriers on the freight rail market in the first quarter of 2017, measured by the volume of goods carried is 22 percent, while in the tonne kilometres it reaches 18 percent.

In passenger rail transport, the number of passengers carried fell by 11 percent during the first quarter compared to the same quarter last year and the number of passenger kilometers achieved for the period was lower by 20 percent.
