HAKOM: Significant growth in the number of high-speed broadband connections in a period of one year
PRESS RELEASE
# # #The share of fixed high-speed broadband connections of 30 Mbit/s and higher grew from slightly under 3 percent to around 11 percent in one year, which is a result of operators’ investments into electronic communications networks and increased user demand for high-speed internet access service. At the same time, the market of pay-TV has been growing continuously and there was the expected increase in the number of users and traffic in mobile communications networks due to the seasonal effect of tourism. Zagreb, 7 December 2016 – According to indicators on the electronic communications market, the number of connections on the Croatian fixed broadband market continued to grown until the end of the third quarter of 2016. There were almost 1,025,000 fixed broadband connections in late September 2016, out of which around 11 percent with speed higher than 30Mbit/s, which is significantly higher than in the previous periods. In the same period of last year, the same indicator was slightly under 3 percent. The seasonal effect, which is characteristic of the third quarter, influenced the growth of the number of users and traffic in the mobile network. Although it was expected to grow, the number of sent SMS and MMS messages decreased annually by around 10 percent which is, inter alia, an indication of increased use of OTT services, such as Skype, Viber, WhatsAp etc., which are much more affordable for end users and provide more functionality than the traditional SMS service. All three mobile network operators offer 4G network services with attractive data packages thus additionally stimulating their usage. The pay-TV market has been growing continuously. IPTV is the leading technology with a market share slightly under 25 percent. However, there is still significant potential for the development of this part of the market since 47 percent of households still watch television only on the basis of digital terrestrial signal.
