HAKOM: Rail transport of goods increased in the third quarter of 2016 compared to the previous quarter

PRESS RELEASE

The total amount of goods transported by rail increased by 17 percent compared to the previous quarter.
Zagreb, 06 December 2016 – Increased business activities of new rail freight transport operators continued in the third quarter of 2016, which is reflected in the increased use of rail infrastructure and rail services, except for the assembling, disassembling and rearranging trains services, which have been decreasing. The number of travelled train kilometres increased by 4 percent in the period in question compared to the previous period.

The most significant element of the third quarter was the appearance of new freight operators in the Republic of Croatia, that is, Rail & Sea Ltd., Zagreb and SŽ - Tovorni promet, Ltd., Ljubljana, Slovenia. Therefore, in addition to the incumbent, there were six new freight operators active in the Republic of Croatia in late September, three of which are registered in the Republic of Croatia and the other three in EU Member States. New freight operators have recorded a continuous increase of their market share in 2016, which in the third quarter amounted to 16 percent in terms of tonne kilometres.

At the same time, the number of carried passengers on the rail transport market is 1 percent lower than in the same quarter of last year.
