ZAGREB, October 27, 2016 - The Working Party on Telecommunications and Information Society held a meeting in Brussels. The working group deals with the issues related to information and communication technology and infrastructure, the Internet and the creation of digital single market in Europe. The central topic of the meeting was the discussion on the Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council of the EU with regard to promoting Internet connectivity in local communities (WiFi4EU).
The proposed Regulation stipulates the provision of financial assistance to the local governments and providers of public services for their projects aimed at installing wireless access points and provision of free connectivity in the centres of public life within their competence or in places where their services are provided (public administration, libraries, healthcare facilities and public areas). The Regulation stipulates the establishment of a simple mechanism for financing the installation of local wireless access points. Financing will be possible in case of no free available public or private access points that can provide high- speed Internet access. On behalf of the Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Industries (HAKOM) Mislav Hebel, Senior Expert for Communication Networks took part in the meeting.
