ZAGREB, 1 June 2016. – The use of railway infrastructure expressed in train kilometres increased by 2 percent in the first quarter of 2016 compared to the same quarter of last year, which is the result of increased activities of the rail passenger carrier. At the same time, the number of transported passengers on the market of passenger rail transport was the same as in the same quarter of last year. Out of the total number of transported passengers 1.76 % were refugees and migrants.
The rail freight transport recorded decreased activity in the first quarter of 2016 compared to the first quarter of 2015. However, at the same time, there was more activity by new rail freight carriers. The most important event in the first quarter was HŽI’s decision on the selection of the contractor for the reconstruction of the existing and building of the second track on the Selo – Križevci railway route. This is a strategic project of public importance for the Republic of Croatia and the greatest infrastructure railway project co-financed by the EU, which is the beginning of significant investments into rail infrastructure the results of which are expected in the medium term.
